Build Referrals Into Your System

Want to get really good at anything?

I suggest you learn from the leaders around you.

One of my mentors is master sales trainer, Eric Lofholm.  In his outstanding book, Continuous Sales Improvement, Eric reveals strategies that have enabled him and thousands of his students to excel at sales.   Eric’s book is transformational.  I refer to it often, re-reading and learning from his insights.  (I’d HIGHLY recommend getting it!)

Eric creates an image of the selling process as a sales mountain.  His book details each step in the process of building successful business relationships.  I’ll share three more tips in follow-up that incorporate his ideas.

TIP #7:  THINK OF YOUR CLIENTS AS BRAND AMBASSADORS

If customers like what you sell, they’ll naturally tell others about you. If you actively make referrals as one of your lead generation methods, you can accelerate your referral rate.

Set the intention to ask for referrals. To get comfortable in asking, Eric advises, “Remind yourself that selling is a service.  When you ask for a referral, you’re asking your customer to help you provide a valuable produce or service to someone they know and care about.”

Through a referral, you’re building on the trust your referral prospect already has in your customer.

TIP #8:  CREATE RECIPROCAL REFERRAL RELATIONSHIPS

Cultivate a system where you and a referral partner can help each other.  Your referral partner would be someone who sells a noncompeting product to your target market.

You can agree to share leads with each other.  For example, a health coach may ask an insurance agent, “How about if I refer my coaching clients to you, and you refer those who advice on staying healthy?”

Consider setting up  ten different recipral referal relationships in ten different industries.

TIP #9:  OFFER COMMISSIONS OR BONUSES

No matter where you are in the sales process — you can write a referral script at the opening or closing of your presentation.

For instance, “Do you know someone who is struggling with…?”  (This gets people to think of others.)

At the closing, you can ask, “Do you know anyone else who may need..?”

I’m going to give you a bonus right NOW.
